Our wool is an eco-friendly choice
Vuoma Company’s wool sweaters and wool hats are hand-knitted by us from Finnish sheep’s wool. Some of the wool yarn is sourced directly from Laaksorinne Farm in Karjaa, where the sheep graze freely for most of the year. No chemicals are used on the farm for parasite control, and the sheep are not subjected to painful mulesing.
Did you know that sheep have a positive environmental impact by helping maintain biodiversity and preserving traditional rural biotopes through grazing? They also carry out this important work in the spacious pastures of Laaksorinne.
Shearing sheep is an act of animal welfare. It does not hurt the sheep, and animal welfare regulations require shearing twice a year, as an unshorn sheep would suffer from excessive wool growth. Animal protection law also requires shearing at least once a year. At Laaksorinne, the sheep are shorn by the farm owner Ankki herself.
Some of our yarns are sourced from the Finnish spinning mill Pirtin Kehräämö. The mill focuses on improving the use of renewable energy, especially in heating the facility and producing the hot water needed for the wool washing process. Geothermal energy is used for heating, and the electricity comes from hydropower.
